Problem

How might we we create a framework for how toolbars are organized and setup within Asana so that project managers can more easily structure their work across any Asana surface?

Solution

I designed a system for how toolbars should operate and be organized for any surface within Asana. The new system focused on correcting big discrepancies that we had on different surfaces and also ensuring the solution is scalable for new advanced functionality.

My team overhauled the toolbars across different views on projects and scaled the hierarchy to over 10 surfaces within Asana. I designed for each of these surfaces and worked closely with individual teams to ensure a smooth process.

I designed a scalable options panel that serves as a centralized hub for leads to set up and configure views. Users can now set up and visualize their views in one quick go. Working with a junior designer on my team we executed on building filtering, sorting, and grouping as nested panels within options.

Impact

Created a header and toolbar hierarchy guide for other teams to refer to when working on toolbars to ensure consistency across the product.

Developed a scalable options panel that allows us to execute on upcoming roadmap initiatives.

Provided consistency and expected behaviors of patterns for customers to utilize.
