Problem
How might we we provide a way for project managers to have more control and customization for the projects that they manage in Asana, making it easier for their team to find and execute on work?
Solution
We created a way for project managers to organize and structure how tasks are arranged within views on projects. Previously users could only use basic section creation that lacked power and connection to other pieces of the product.
With Group By, project managers can now utilize custom fields and metadata to select how they want to organize tasks for their team to work off of. Connecting groupings to custom fields is especially powerful and unlocks a lot of opportunity to create tailored views for different use cases and needs.
I designed a scalable system for toolbar menus that utilized patterns and components that worked across filtering, sorting and now grouping.
Impact
Directly tackled one of the most frequently requested features from customers and created a reusable pattern for other surfaces within the product.
Core tab interactions increased:
Tab creation from 5% to 11%
Tab removal from 2.65% to 6%
Tab reordering from 1.08% to 8%
View saving from 9% to 17%
Group by drove $1.12M ARR due to increased project sharing and free domains conversions.
